Original Note:

The phases of the moon are not caused by Earth's shadow. The side of the moon facing the sun is lit by sunlight, and the amount of the lit face visible from Earth changes as the moon revolves around Earth. Lunar eclipses, on the other hand, are caused by Earth's shadow. More: https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/moons/earths-moon/lunar-phases-and-eclipses/
