This does trace back to a true case study of an 18 year old transgender woman who got necrotizing fasciitis after surgery. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27664856/ However, this is not unique to transgender surgery. Between 2003 and 2013 there was an average of 900 deaths per year from necrotizing fasciitis. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5725950/
