Original Note:

This is an optical illusion caused by the scattering of sunlight by particles in the Earth’s atmosphere. You will often see this when the sun is low on the horizon and the light passes through a greater thickness of atmosphere. Thus the increased amount of light scattering. https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/learn-about/weather/optical-effects/crepuscular-rays
