Land Surface Temperatures are a completely different data set from air temperatures and one has not replaced the other in any way. As can be seen from the map, ground temperatures in Europe can be well above 60C whereas the European air temperature record is 48.8C. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_weather_records
