Original Note:
Ancient Greeks in the Hellenistic period knew the earth was round thanks to Pythagoras in 500bc and Aristotle (350bc). This was prior to Eratosthenes’ experiments at Alexandria and Syene (230bc). The experiment was only used to measure the earth’s circumference. https://starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/StarChild/questions/question54.html https://www.loc.gov/collections/finding-our-place-in-the-cosmos-with-carl-sagan/articles-and-essays/modeling-the-cosmos/ancient-greek-astronomy-and-cosmology#:~:text=During%20a%20lunar%20eclipse%2C%20when,the%20Earth%20is%20a%20sphere.
