Chemical elements have different properties when they are in different compounds. Sodium (Na) explodes in contact with water. Chlorine (Cl) is a toxic gas. Together they make NaCl, table salt. Similarly Thimerosal has not the same properties of metallic mercury (Hg) https://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/concerns/thimerosal/index.html
