Original Note:

Black cowboys emerged in the 1860’s as white Americans began moving to the Mexican territory of Texas in early 19th century. They do not predate white cowboys. Indigenous vaqueros were trained to wrangle cattle on horseback by the Spaniards who were also white. https://www.history.com/news/mexican-vaquero-american-cowboy https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/lesser-known-history-african-american-cowboys-180962144/
