Ramsey Hunt syndrome, VZV encephalitis, and Shingles are all caused by the same ubiquitous virus. The manifestations are different but can evolve and change. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2814602/ It is possible she was omitting information, that it was only Shingles at the time, or she was lying.
