Thimerosal, a mercury compound added to vaccines as an anti-bacterial agent, was removed from childhood vaccines in the United States in 2001. Thimerosal is based upon ethylmercury, which is easily removed from the body and therefore not as toxic as mercury in edible fish. https://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/concerns/thimerosal/index.html
