Clarification: a piece of the actual surface didn't break off the sun. Rather a solar prominence, a long electrically charged stream of plasma, broke apart from the sun's surface (not unusual) and remained airborne for several hours around the sun's poles (unusual). https://www.livescience.com/enormous-polar-vortex-on-the-sun-is-unprecedented-scientists-say
