This statement is factually incorrect. During the 1980s the United States funded the Mujahideen of Afghanistan as part of Operation Cyclone. The Taliban was an off shoot of the Mujahideen after the operation was completed and there was a feeling of disenfranchisement. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Cyclone
