According to Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, a pothole is “a pot-shaped hole in a road surface”. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pothole This hole is on a sidewalk, and looks purposely constructed with an openable door. Typically, potholes are created over time by cars or weathering.
