There is data and records of over 36k slave ship voyages from Africa to the Americas over the 350 year period. With an average of around 122 trips a year, this is not a wild number and it easily explains the ~12 mil number and includes the 2 or so mil lost in the voyages. https://www.slavevoyages.org/blog/methodology-trans-atlantic
