There is in fact a meaningful difference. The AR-15 does not have a full auto or burst selection like the M4A1 does. An AR-15 is not full auto and semi-automatic. The only other selection is 'safe'. Unlike the M4A1, the AR15 is only available to civilians. https://gununiversity.com/ar15-vs-m4/
