The usage of quotation marks around the word “massacred” is correct per the AP Stylebook. https://www.ragan.com/ap-style-quotation-marks/ That being said, it is possible that an editorial decision was made to use the exact word from the source post as an excuse to enclose it in what would be perceived as scare quotes.
